Eva "Evelyn" R. Jacobson was born 14 Aug 1899 in New York City, one of 9 children of Isaac & Katie Jacobson. Her parents were Russian-born. Her father was a factory owner. She grew up at 2816 Farragut Road.
Evelyn married in 1921 to Samuel Margaretten and had 5 children in New Jersey. Their children, in order based on the 1930 U.S. Census, were Paula, Estella, and Ruth. Joel and another unidentified sibling appears to have been born afterwards. As of 2009, 3 children were still living; Paula of California, Ruth of Pittsburgh, and Joel of Arizona.
Samuel & Evelyn Margaretten moved to Florida, and they divorced there in 1950. Evelyn R. Margaretten then married Moe Kozak in 1952. Mr. Moe Kozak died in Florida in 1957.
Mrs. Evelyn Kozak ran a boardinghouse in Miami, Florida, until she was 90. She avidly played Scrabble until she was 95. She moved to Pittsburgh in her 90's to be closer to her daughter, Ruth Terner. She lived independently in an apartment until age 104/105. She then moved into Charles M. Morris Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Squirrel Hill (part of Pittsburgh).
In January 2010, she moved to the Kensington section of Brooklyn where her granddaughter, Brucha Weisberger, lives. On her 111th birthday, 14 Aug 2010, she was in the hospital at Maimondies Medical Center, admitted the day before due to an infection.
On Sunday, 14 Aug 2011, Mrs. Evelyn Kozak has been presumed to have celebrated her 112th birthday.
